How we think about it

Asphalt is one of those trades where the visible part is the easy part. Anyone can lay a black surface that looks right on the day it is finished. What decides whether it is still right in fifteen years is the grade it was built to, the base underneath it, and how well it was compacted — none of which is visible in a photograph, and all of which is settled before the first ton arrives.

The same logic runs through everything else on our list. Crack sealing is not glamorous, but it is the cheapest thing you can do and it keeps water out of the base, which is where the real damage happens. Sealcoating on a two-to-three-year cycle takes the UV hit instead of your pavement. Both of them defer the resurfacing bill, and resurfacing defers the replacement bill. We would rather sell you the small job on a schedule than the large one in an emergency.

The assessment comes first

We offer free assessments, and the reason is that the resurface-versus-replace question is genuinely hard to answer from the surface. Widespread cracking on a sound foundation is an overlay — a new surface for a fraction of the cost of tearing everything out. The same cracking over a base that has failed is not, and an overlay there will crack through in the same places inside a couple of years.

That is a call worth making properly, so we come out and make it. Sometimes the answer is that your pavement does not need anything yet. We will tell you that too.

Who we work for

Homeowners with driveways, businesses with parking lots, and municipalities and associations with roads. The standard is the same across all three, but the conversation is not, which is why each has its own page. Central Virginia in particular has a great many private subdivision roads that no public authority maintains, and those boards deserve a written scope they can actually put in front of their members.
