What causes potholes, and how can I prevent them?
Potholes form from water infiltration, freeze-thaw cycles and heavy traffic. Water gets into the pavement, freezes and expands, breaks the material apart, then traffic pulls the loose pieces out. Regular maintenance — crack sealing and sealcoating — prevents most potholes by keeping the water out in the first place, and it prolongs the life of the asphalt overall.
Why do potholes appear in late winter?
Because that is when Central Virginia crosses the freezing point most often. Every freeze expands the water in the pavement and every thaw lets more in. A crack that survived December can be a hole by the end of February for exactly that reason.
Is a patch permanent?
A properly cut, filled and compacted patch on sound surrounding pavement lasts. A patch in a section whose base has failed is buying time, and we will tell you that when we quote it rather than after.
